This is a project I was briefed back in 2021, when a Brazilian real estate agency wanted to present a few Canadian cities to clients, to fill the ''destinations'' section of their magazine.
Canada had been selected from an internal research with the client base, but I knew from the start the project scope would be restricted to three places maximum. As a token of appreciation to my work, I was granted the freedom to apply my experience as a Canadian resident to pick the most visually-appealing destinations.
The selection was tough. Ultimately, the chosen cities were Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, due to their tourism influx.
My design inspiration for the project were late 90s mainstream magazines, with large pictures crossing page borders, while making use of white space to scatter drops of text. Since the briefing was strict to focusing on visual cues, it was decided that pictures had to be the priority. When selecting the images, I was careful to pick those that provided more visual and emotional information about the place, so I didn't have to rely on heavy text.
Toronto has a modern, cosmopolitan appeal, like New York City.
Vancouver, with its beautiful nature and more laid-back personality.
Montreal with its European-esque style.
Adobe InDesign was essential to this editorial, since it empowers designers to control all aspects of typography, accurate design dimensions, fine-controlled positions, and also outputs print-ready pieces in CMYK color profile.
I am particularly drawn to black and white images, but the client wasn't very fond of the idea. Instead, I pitched him with the subtle blue tone, which aspires lush, while not being as dramatic as a plain B&W style.
